Textual Analysis

Rap

Here is a music video of the same genre which is Rap. The Sound, Camera, Editing and Mise En Scene is all similar for the first part of our video until it completely contrasts. This is the street and urban life.

Establishing shots and tracking shots are used to lay foundation of the location that they live to continue the theme of everyday life. The angles are usually mid shots with the main characters all centralised to draw attention to them, it also contains some good tracking shots and smooth movement. The editing is pretty basic as music videos do not tend to have very extravagant special effects. All the shots are edited to flow well together in order to continue the storyline of the movement in their lives. Some parts are more sped up than others to show inconsistency. They haven't got any noticeable costumes on, this is to make it look like everyday life. They are sometimes wearing masks to cover their faces to show they want to erase an element of their identity or that an element of their identity is hidden. Generally the shots are done outside which is taking advantage of the good natural lighting. This gives a good clear view of everything that is going on. Using shadows to their advantage similarly to create an element of mystery whilst also keeping it natural All actors have similar facial expressions and body language, this would suggest that they are more than friends- possibly part of the same community. You can tell they see each other every day because of the way they look comfortable around each other and that everything they do seems normal. They could be part of a gang as they all have do the same hand gestures upon meeting. Naturalistic make-up, none to represent the fact its everyday life for them. Red cups suggests they are consuming alcohol, this is backed up by their behaviour that seems reckless and rebellious. Most of the shots are set on the streets or in a flat hallway, this is in order to fit in with the everyday theme. Tracking shots around the estates, community centers and local shops help to create a visual idea of a community setting.

  1. Some good analysis Mel, but far too brief. Give specifics. This should be an in depth analysis - a paragraph for Mise en Scene, one for Camera, etc.
This statement couldn't be further from the truth: "The editing is pretty basic as music videos do not tend to have very extravagant special effects." - what about the Bieber video you just posted?!
