Music, Lyric and Visuals

Music, Lyric and Visuals

Today we listened to this song by Dry The River, we listened to it without watching the music video and we had to describe what our music video would look like for this song. We all put down ideas and shared them with the class. Once we had shared our ideas we then watched the actual video. My initial idea was that it could be set in a forest, and as at the start of the song its quite slow, you could focus on some close ups of wildlife (small e.g ants etc) then showing a performance of a band in the forest, focussing mainly on the performance and emotion of the singer. Then when the music speeds up more you could have the band members wearing wild costumes, towards the end of the sped up part it would have some larger wildlife in the background (large e.g bears etc), ending on a wide establishing shot which will pan up to a white fade.

Peer Ideas:
Meg: Couple arguing, dancers and busking
I liked this idea and think it would work well however it is very extravagant and would be difficult to achieve.
Max: Broken up relationship, and boy follows girl but gets shut off by her as he is now a stranger. I did like this idea and think it would be easy to come up with some creative shot ideas for this however I also thought it was really sad and negative, which does match the lyrics.

After watching...
I find this video extremely strange and eccentric and I find that it largely focuses on lack of freedom and nature.  I like the element of lack of movement as I feel it wouldn't suit the beat of the song. I didn't like the idea of a dead pigeon on a human because I think there could've been a more creative way of symbolising freedom and the lack of freedom in an indie style. They have not used anything expensive which shows it's a low budget music video, this is because they are trying to emphasise the fact that it is not about making an extravagant spectacle but rather supporting the message their band is trying to give out.

  1. A good summary of the task and ideas, Mel. Could you also reflect on what you learned from this in relation to the title of this blog post?
